The Tel Aviv Scrabble® Club

Club Director: Evan Cohen

Beginners' Night

The first session of every month is beginners' night. A special playing format allows beginners to play Scrabble in a friendly environment, without having to compete against cut-throat professionals, keeping things as non-competitive as possible, thereby allowing them to enjoy our club both socially and Scrabble-wise.

On BegNight, beginners get to play two games against fellow beginners and one game against an experienced player (this format is the suggested format, but it’s optional – beginners, basically, can play as many “beginner-games” as they like…). The club director will give the newbies an initial introduction to club Scrabble (very similar to living room Scrabble, but with 20 others around you doing the same thing). After this introduction (and, maybe, a short break for refreshments), players sit down for their first game which begins at 19:45. Beginners can choose to play their first game with an experienced player. Not against. With. The idea is that the more experienced player can explain the basic principles of the game, give out a few tips and have a relaxed non-competitive game. After this instructional game, the beginner will take on two additional opponents, both beginners. At all times, beginners will have access to their "starter sheet", a few basic tips and a list of the two-letter words allowed in club play (see more under "Tips and Strategy").

What then? Well, beginners can either decide to come for the first session of any month (indefinitely) or start coming to any session they wish (recommended). At any point, a beginner may decide to switch from the Beginner Division to the Zyzzyva Division, subsequently becoming a “regular” player in the Tel-Aviv Scrabble Club.

Welcome, all!
